As a Writing Fellows Program Student Manager (WFSM), you work closely with the Writing Fellows Coordinator Edward Evins and the other WFSM to oversee day-to-day operations of the Writing Fellow Tutoring Writing Fellow Tutoring Program. Each WFSM serves as a point-of-contact for 3-7 courses per quarter.
In addition to the core work of serving on the Writing Fellows Program team, WFSMs may work as a Student Manager on Call (SMOC) at least once per week, and facilitate quarterly professional development Tutor Talk sessions.

✨ Principal Duties & Responsibilities

As a Student Manager, duties and responsibilities ebb and flow throughout each quarter and over the course of an academic year. We are committed to making sure your duties and responsibilities are realistic and manageable.
Serve as a point-of-contact for 3-7 courses per quarter, including
  • Picking writing fellows cohorts from tutoring staff
  • Creating and implementing writing fellows cohort materials and logistics across WCOnline, Slack, and Notion (and/or any new technology platforms the Writing Fellows Program adopts)
  • Scheduling logistics related to each writing fellows cohort and each writing assignment
  • Managing any schedule changes that impact assigned cohorts
  • Meeting with each cohort throughout the quarter
  • Soliciting feedback from cohorts about their course
Facilitate quarterly Tutor Talk sessions in collaboration with other student managers
  • Meet with Professional Development Student Managers to prepare for each round of Tutor Talk
  • Facilitate 1-3 Tutor Talk sessions twice per quarter
Assist administrators in hiring new tutors in Spring Quarter 2025
  • Read and score applications
  • Conduct interviews as part of hiring team
Meet regularly with the Writing Fellow Tutoring Writing Fellow Tutoring Team
Be an exemplary employee and leader of/model for other student employees
We count on Student Managers to be model employees and be a leader of and for other student employees on staff. This includes knowing and following our PoliciesPolicies and in general being invested in making our workplace as effective and collegial as possible. To be explicit, we do expect Student Managers to be highly invested in their work and to go above and beyond in solving problems that arise. We do not ask that Student Managers never make mistakes or face challenges at work, but rather to face challenges and own up to mistakes and work with their supervisor and team to learn from these experiences.

πŸ† Requirements & Qualifications

  • Must be a current undergraduate or graduate student** employee in the Writing Center who will also be a student in the 2024-2025 Academic Year
  • Commit to serving as a Student Manager for a full academic year, including 20 hours/week all 10 weeks of Summer, Autumn, Winter, and Spring Quarters, with the option to work December Intersession
    • Writing Fellows Student Managers in their second or subsequent years in the role may be eligible to work a partial academic year depending upon circumstances and needs, in consultation with and by approval of Edward Evins
  • In addition to working in the core Writing Center roles of Writing Center TutorWriting Center Tutor Writing FellowWriting Fellow, and ReceptionistReceptionistβ€”or in some cases, as Writing Group FacilitatorsWriting Group Facilitatorsβ€”Writing Fellows Student Managers may be able to participate on teams, in consultation with and by approval of Edward Evins
    • Please note that team participation may be limited given the time and focus required of WFSM work
  • Have a regular presence in the office to be a source of support to tutors and daily operations
  • Demonstrated high-quality tutoring practices
  • Demonstrated skills in collaboration, facilitation, and communication
  • Ability to be self-driven, follow through, and work independently
  • Have a passion for connecting with others
