As the Workshops Student Manager (WSSM), your work closely with Workshops & Digital Resources Coordinator Katie Martin, focusing on three key areas of responsibility: planning and leading weekly Workshops team meetings, overseeing the development of yearly Professional Development Workshops (PDWs), and overseeing team scheduling.
In addition to the role-specific work described above, you support other student managers in their responsibilities to facilitate Tutor Talk and may work as a Student Manager on Call (SMOC) one morning each week during regular Writing Center open hours each quarter.
β¨ Principal Duties & Responsibilities
As a Student Manager, duties and responsibilities ebb and flow throughout each quarter and over the course of an academic year. We are committed to making sure your duties and responsibilities are realistic and manageable.
Plan and lead weekly team meetings
- Plan and facilitate weekly team meetings, with a focus on skill-building related to lesson planning and public speaking.
- Respond to needs and priorities of team members to deliver lessons that address their skill-building goals as they relate to lesson planning and public speaking.
Oversee development and facilitation of yearly Professional Development Workshops
- In collaboration with the Workshops Coordinator, provide direction and mentorship to the Workshop team members who are developing PDWs, nurturing the creation of research-based workshops to support effective Writing Center tutoring practices.
- Check in with PDW groups weekly (or more frequently, as necessary).
- Monitor due dates for deliverables and follow up on missing or late work.
- Provide feedback on lesson plans and materials.
- Serve as a go-between to communicate team questions and needs to Workshops Coordinator.
Manage team calendar and deadlines
- Establish deadlines for the PDW development process.
- Establish schedule of weekly team meeting topics that complement each stage of the PDW development process.
Oversee WCOnline scheduling for team work time
- Determine PDW groupings based on schedule availability and team member preferences.
- Field requests for extra PDW work time from team members.
- Work with Workshops Coordinator and other Writing Center leadership to get approval for team membersβ extra hours and make necessary schedule adjustments in a timely fashion.
- Create placeholders for PDW work and team meetings.
- Communicate schedule adjustments and to team members.
- Meet regularly in preparation for Tutor Talk
- Facilitate Tutor Talk
Assist administrators in hiring new tutors in Spring Quarter 2025
- Read and score applications
- Conduct interviews as part of the hiring team

π Requirements & Qualifications
- Must be a current undergraduate or graduate student** employee in the Writing Center who will also be a student in the 2024-2025 Academic Year
- Commit to serving as a Student Manager for a full academic year, including 20 hours/week for all 10 weeks of Autumn, Winter, and Spring Quarters, with the option to work during Summer and December Intersession
- Workshops Student Managers in their second or subsequent years in the role must be available for the entire academic year, Autumn Quarter-Spring Quarter, in order to continue in the position
