Writing Center Tutors are undergraduate & graduate students from a variety of disciplines and expertise. They collaborate with writers from across the university to help them with a wide variety of writing projects (academic papers, e-portfolios, resumes, applications, creative writing, etc.) at any stage of the writing process. They communicate with these writers to provide detailed feedback on their work, offer resources about writing, and help plan next steps that allow writers to improve their pieces and learn transferable writing skills. Every Writing Center Tutor takes WRD 395: Writing Center Theory and Pedagogy their first quarter working for the Writing Center.
✨ Principal Duties & Responsibilities
Work with all DePaul-affiliated writers, in a wide range of appointment types & modalities, to provide high-quality, revision-oriented feedback (70%)
- Assist writers with any genre at any stage of the writing process
- Write letters to writers to summarize appointments & offer next steps for revision
- Work as a writing fellow (course-embedded tutor) as assigned, collaborating with a cohort of other tutors to complete writing fellows appointments
Complete required Writing Center tutor training and ongoing tutor development (20%)
- Earn a grade of “B” or higher in the required Writing Center Theory & Pedagogy course during the first quarter of employment
- Attend & engage in All-Staff Orientation (beginning of Fall Quarter) & Winter Retreat (beginning of Winter Quarter)
- Participate each quarter in two required professional development activities: Tutor Talk & a professional development workshop
- Participate in other professional development during shifts as assigned
- For each quarter you work, meet with your assigned administrator for Professional Development Check-ins, preparing to do so by setting a Smart Goal and completing Tutoring Reflections in an ePortfolio
Complete side work related to Writing Center programs and operations as assigned (10%)
Follow employee protocol & maintain professionalism in the workplace (100%)
- Adhere to policies & procedures outlined in The Handbook (this wedsite), DePaul’s Code of Conduct, & Code of Student Responsibility
- Monitor schedule in WCOnline to complete appointments & other assigned work
- Communicate appropriately with co-workers, office receptionists, & Writing Center administrators, including being logged on to mission-critical web services including WCOnline, Slack, & Google Drive throughout the entirety of each shift
- Report hours to Writing Center Associate Director for Operations Management (Katie Brown) through BlueSky

🗓️ Hours/Schedule
Writing Center tutors work a minimum of 5 hours per week & a maximum of 20. There is sometimes the possibility of extra hours* up to 25 hours per week. DePaul domestic student workers are limited to 25 hours total, per week, across all of their positions. DePaul international student workers are limited to 20 hours total, per week, across all of their positions.
Writing Center tutors have shifts at both the Loop and Lincoln Park campus locations and may elect to work 1 regular remote shift each week, provided they are able to meet remote-work requirements.
