As an Operations Student Manager (OSM), you work closely with the Associate Director for Operations Management and the other OSM to oversee day to day operations of the Writing Center offices.
In addition to the core work of managing student employee schedule changes and scheduling, training, and mentoring receptionists, you attend weekly Operations Team meetings, facilitate quarterly professional development Tutor Talk sessions, and coordinate Student Manager on Call (SMOC) shifts during regular Writing Center open hours each quarter.
β¨ Principal Duties & Responsibilities
As a Student Manager, duties and responsibilities ebb and flow throughout each quarter and over the course of an academic year. We are committed to making sure your duties and responsibilities are realistic and manageable.
Coordinate creation and management of Writing Center schedule
- Collect tutor-availability and work request prior to every quarter/session weβre open for operations
- Organize tutoring, reception, and team work shifts
- Input shifts into WCOnline
- Collaborate with the other OSM to double check accuracy of WCOnline shifts
Monitor the schedule change request form to ensure adequate staffing for both Writing Center locations
- Collaborate with the Associate Director of Operations Management and the other OSM
- Inform other stakeholders when schedule change requests impact other programs, teams, or other scheduled work
- Meet regularly in preparation for Tutor Talk
- Facilitate Tutor Talk
Assist administrators in hiring new tutors in Spring Quarter 2025
- Read and score applications
- Conduct interviews as part of the hiring team
Meet regularly with the Writing Center Operations Team and with Associate Director for Operations and the other OSM
Be an exemplary employee and leader of/model for other student employees
We count on Student Managers to be model employees and be a leader of and for other student employees on staff. This includes knowing and following our Policies and in general being invested in making our workplace as effective and collegial as possible. To be explicit, we do expect Student Managers to be highly invested in their work and to go above and beyond in solving problems that arise. We do not ask Student Managers to never make mistakes or face challenges at work, but rather to face challenges and own up to mistakes and work with their supervisor and team to learn from these experiences.

π Requirements & Qualifications
- Must be a current undergraduate or graduate student** who will also be a student for the duration of the 2024-2025 Academic Year
- Commit to serving as a Student Manager for a full academic year, including 20 hours/week all 10 weeks of Summer, Autumn, Winter, and Spring Quarters, with the option to work December Intersession
- Operations Student Managers in their second or subsequent years in the role may be eligible to work a partial academic year depending upon circumstances and needs, in consultation with and by approval of Katie Brown
- In addition to working in the core Writing Center roles of Writing Center Tutor Writing Fellow, and Receptionistβor in some cases, as Writing Group FacilitatorsβOperations Student Managers may not be on teams, given the time and focus required of this work
- Have a regular presence in the office to be a source of support to tutors and daily operations
