Writing Groups SL

Writing Groups are opportunities for writers with specific writing interests and/or of specific identities to gather together and support one another. The Writing Center hosts a number of writing groups throughout each quarter. Writing Group facilitators support writers’ growth, needs, and interests by facilitating each meeting and offering feedback on members’ writing, focused writing time, and/or writing-related resources or presentations. Facilitators also plan and host open mic events or other socials for their writing group.

📜 Position Summary

Under the supervision of Associate Director Erin Herrmann, the Writing Groups Student Leader (SL) facilitates one or more writing groups as their schedule allows and manages all aspects of writing groups at the Writing Center, including facilitator training and support as well as meeting logistics and promotion. The Writing Center currently offers four writing groups, which you can read more about at the link below.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Serve as a facilitator for one or more Writing Groups (30%)
Support and manage additional Writing Group Facilitators (25%)
  • Collaborate with supervisor to hire new writing group facilitators as needed
  • Train new writing group facilitators and maintain/update training materials when necessary
  • Formally check-in with writing group facilitators at least once quarterly
  • Schedule writing group facilitators in WCOnline
Coordinate logistics of event planning for writing group meetings (15%)
  • Set up quarterly Writing Groups schedule in WCOnline
  • Block of time on facilitators’ schedules for planning time, hosting meetings, and check-ins
  • Ensure rooms and/or Zoom sessions are scheduled as needed
  • Assist with budget management for group supplies and catering orders
Manage promotion of writing groups (15%)
  • Design marketing materials in Canva to promote writing groups each quarter
  • Work with Outreach Team to share promotional materials via Writing Center social media accounts
  • Follow DePaul’s Office of Student Involvement procedures for flyer approval
Collaborate with other colleges and departments who partner with writing groups (10%)
  • Maintain open communication with partners to ensure invitations/marketing materials reach intended audiences
Perform other leadership duties as assigned (5%)
  • Meet regularly with supervisor to check-in
